    ESA’s Green Transition Information Factories (GTIF): Driving Innovation and Sustainability Towards Carbon Neutrality

    The ESA Green Transition Information Factories (GTIF) are an online ecosystem of solutions, powered by Earth Observation and other geospatial data, that allows users to interactively discover the underlying opportunities and complexities of transitioning to carbon neutrality by 2050 using the power of Earth Observation, cloud-computing, and cutting-edge analytics.

    The cloud-based integrated GTIF environment enables:

    • Decision-makers to assess and monitor the effectiveness of policies and evaluate political objectives and outcomes using GTIF-provided data, indicators, and interactive exploration tools;
    • Industry to develop novel solutions to foster the Green Economy, supported by space technologies, and connect to relevant national and international stakeholders within the wider GTIF ecosystem;
    • Citizens to engage and understand the needs for their actions through interactive exploration tools and scientific narratives across key Green Transition domains.

    The GTIF is a key component of the Space for Green Future (S4GF) Accelerator and the wider ESA strategy to address the Green Transition and the required transformation of economy and society towards a sustainable and carbon neutral future.

    The GTIF initiative is set to make significant strides in green technologies. Building on the success of Austria’s first GTIF demonstration last year, this innovative concept is advancing its mission to support national priorities in their Net Zero journey.

    New GTIF Activities Launched

    In the spring of 2024, ESA launched three new GTIF kick-starter projects in additional geographic areas: the Baltics, UK, Ireland and France, and the Arctic and North Atlantic. These projects aim to strengthen open innovation and scalability across diverse regions and sectors, empowering stakeholders to drive the Green Transition forward.

    • Phase 1 (first 6 months): developing a set of new capabilities for a smaller region and demonstrating these co-created capabilities to the engaged stakeholders.
    • Phase 2 (months 7 to 24): focusing on geographic upscaling and scientific robustness, then showcasing the developments in a regional presentation covering large areas and several countries.

    The developed capabilities will be ported to an interoperable and reusable cloud-service implementation and made available within a GTIF services marketplace.

    What is coming next?

    The ESA ‘‘Information Factory Pathfinders for Adaptation’’ activity aims at exploring further the Information Factory concept, pushing towards the operationalisation and integration of EO-integrated services by end-users in the context of adaptation.  Here the recording of a dedicated online information session for an overview of the activity.
