    PUBLICLY LISTED SPACE COMPANIES

With the number of companies growing along with investor confidence, there is a need to bring together information about the space sector in Europe. The European Space Agency, the European Commission and Promus Ventures, have joined forces to identify a list of European space-based companies currently listed on the stock market. The European Space Index is a virtual portfolio of European publicly traded space companies that can be used to measure their stock market performance. It is designed to display a fair representation of European space companies and will assist investors and industry professionals in the creation of investment strategies and the creation of new financial products.

The performance of the European Space Index serves as:

Thermometer of the financial markets. Benchmark, a point of reference for management of space companies Increasing awareness about space within the financial community

A METHODOLOGY TO IDENTIFY SPACE COMPANIES

A dedicated expert group with deep knowledge of the sector is set up to analyse, monitor and identify companies involved within the Space sector.

    Choices of companies

    Geography

For inclusion, a company must be either:

    • listed in ESA or European Union Member States stock exchange or
    • originally set up in an ESA or European Union Member State but listed on other exchanges around the world.

Even if companies have decided to make their IPO on other markets, they have been benefiting from European support (e.g. business incubation, acceleration) and financing (e.g. through R&D grants, contracts).

    Sector Breakdown

Space-related enterprises can be categorised based on whether the services and goods they provide are “upstream” or “downstream” – though some companies do both.

    1. Upstream: includes firms that design, manufacture and deploy space systems and their launch vehicles. That includes the design and delivery of hardware and software required in ground stations.
    1. Downstream: refers to operators that deliver communications, navigation and earth observation data as well as applications and solutions enabled by those signals to end-users and service providers.

End-users, such as purely telecommunications providers (e.g. orange/SFR) are excluded from the index. However, companies for which at least 90% of their business is dependent on space capabilities (e.g. TomTom) are included.

    EXTERNAL VALIDATION:

We have validated the concept and gathered input from stakeholders such as Promus Ventures, which have experience in creating a space index, and the Deutsche Bank, a leading financial institution with a global space practice. Further validation of the methodology to identify space companies is underway with other partners.

If you are part of the financial community or the space industry and you have comments/input, we will be glad to hear from you. To get in contact with the team responsible of the European Space Index:
