This activity will characterise the direct-to-vehicle satellite link across a variety of realistic operational environments, including urban, rural, mountainous, highway, and country routes. The aim is to produce meaningful recommendations that could guide the development of future vehicle-to-satellite networks, while considering frequency bands and orbits that could feasibly support the Use Cases defined by the 5GAA.Initially, the activity will identify suitable orbital assets for a live measurement campaign to collect expected link statistics based on the orbital parameters and typical vehicular movements in different environments and frequency bands. Subsequently, a measurement campaign will be conducted with a focus on the satellite propagation link, leveraging additional information from the mobile (terrestrial) network performance to make indirect estimations about the overall network performance. The outputs from this activity will include the definition of system-level requirements and specifications for future satellite-to-vehicular connectivity, as well as the establishment of roadmaps necessary for the technological developments required to offer these services competitively. Additionally, the activity will generate useful data that could contribute to standardisation efforts if such an initiative were to be undertaken.
