The European Space Agency (ESA) and Thales Alenia Space are hosting the Argonaut Lunar Descent Element (LDE) Supplier Industry Day on 6 March 2025, at ALTEC Headquarters in Turin, Italy. This event is a pivotal moment for Europe’s lunar exploration efforts, offering a comprehensive overview of the Argonaut project and its future.
Overview of the Argonaut Project
The Argonaut project is Europe’s strategic initiative to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon. ESA has partnered with Thales Alenia Space Italy to develop the Argonaut Lunar Descent Element, ESA’s first lunar lander. This project aims to provide autonomous access to the Moon, supporting international exploration programmes.
Key components of the Argonaut project include:
- Lunar Descent Element (LDE): ensures precise lunar landing.
- Cargo Platform Element: facilitates various mission types.
- Mission Payload Element: delivers supplies, scientific instruments, and rovers.
ArgoNET, the first operational mission, is expected in 2031, with the Lunar Descent Element delivery set for 2030. By the end of 2026, ESA will select the industrial consortium for integrating the first Lunar Descent Element.
Event Agenda
Participants will gain insights into the Argonaut mission through a structured agenda, which includes:
- Morning session: presentations on the technical, industrial, and strategic aspects of the Argonaut mission.
- Afternoon session: one-on-one meetings with key representatives to explore partnerships and procurement processes.
- Overview of procurement opportunities: the event will highlight various procurement opportunities, from structural and mechanical systems to software and testing facilities.
