    PATENT COMPETENCE DOMAIN

    ABSTRACT

The European Space Agency (ESA) has developed an array antenna with controlled radiation pattern envelope and the method to manufacture it. This technology can be used in broadcasting, naval, space, weather research, optics and radio frequency identification industries. Licence agreement collaboration is sought.

The present invention relates to array antennas with controlled radiation pattern envelope and to a method to manufacture them with an operational field of view larger than their minimum bandwidth. More specificity relates to aperiodic phased array antennas designed to:

    • scan narrow beam over the field of view
    • multibeam antennas generating several beams pointing in different directions in the same field of view
    • phased arrays designed to generate a shaped beam

The invention can be applied to emitting and receiving antennas.

The invention decreases the scan losses, losses associated to beams pointing away from the boresight direction or broad coverage beams in aperiodic array antennas. This technology provides array antennas with a directivity with tailored angular dependency over a given field of view. Another characteristic of the invention is that the weighted average of the shape of the radiating elements of the antenna is either flat within 35% or less over a required field of view or increasing from the center towards the edge of said required field of view.

Innovations and advantages of the offer:

The invention decreases the scan losses, losses associated to beams pointing away from the boresight direction or broad coverage beams in aperiodic array antennas and describes a how to manufacture the antennas.

    Domain of Application:

The VHDL core, adapted to the ERC32 three chip and single chip processors, as well as the 21020 DSP, has been implemented by Astrium Velizy to the T7907E chip under ESA contract.
