On 27 November 2023, the ESA Commercialisation Days: Transportation event will take place. Key actors from the transportation and space sectors will come together to develop new synergies. Read the story below from Skytek, one of the start-ups that will pitch during the event.
Background:
Skytek was awarded funding through the ESA ARTES programme for the development of a demonstrator titled ‘Next Generation – Recognised Maritime Picture’ (NG-RMP). The project focused on the use of emerging Satellite AaIS vessel position technology to generate a dynamic and improved RMP. This would determine ‘vessels of interest’ for the Irish Naval Service and provide real time aggregated information on vessels for the insurance industry.
New technology
The system was further enhanced by the integration of high-resolution Earth observation datasets, SAR data and machine learning. This provided insurance organisations at major ports worldwide the capability to detect dark activities on vessels, calculate the value of cargo and make calculated risk assumptions regarding the vessels.
The technology has now led to two major software as a service (SAAS) products. Firstly, the ‘Situation Room’ providing a range of maritime services to the insurance industry. This covers aggregation, risk scoring, vessel ESG rating and valuations, cargo monitoring and claims management. Secondly, the ‘Satellite Club’ putting Earth observation and Earth observation satellite technology in the hands of the insurance industry. The system provides tailored insurance industrial reports based on Earth observation data for major events of interest. The reports cover marine casualties, assets affected by conflicts and post major weather disaster analysis for early calculation of insurance exposure. The systems now have several major insurances, re-insurances and brokers as clients.
