Supporting Czech Participation in ESA Phi-Lab Austria

ESA Technology Broker Czechia supports Czech companies in engaging with the ESA Phi-Lab network through cooperation with ESA Phi-Lab Austria and ESA Phi-Lab Norway, helping them mature technologies with commercial potential and prepare for European-scale collaborations. This involvement provides practical experience in building consortia, developing competitive proposals, and accessing relevant infrastructure and expertise.

A concrete step in this growing cooperation is the Czech-Austrian Upstream Matchmaking Day 2026 in Vienna, intended to facilitate concrete joint projects for future ESA Phi-Lab and related ESA commercialisation opportunities.

Why ESA Phi-LabNET matters for Czech companies

ESA Technology Broker Czechia is actively supporting the successful integration of Czech companies into the ESA Phi-LabNET, including close cooperation with Phi-Lab Austria and Phi-Lab Norway. Through this engagement, Czech partners are gaining access not only to international collaboration opportunities, but also to a structured innovation environment that helps transform advanced space technologies into commercially viable solutions.

For many Czech space technology companies, entering the ESA Phi-LabNET ecosystem represents a decisive step forward. Phi-Labs are designed to support disruptive technologies with strong commercial potential, bridging the gap between research excellence and market deployment. By engaging with local Phi-Lab infrastructures abroad, Czech applicants can test whether the Phi-Lab model fits their growth ambitions, mature their technologies in a demanding European context, and better understand how to position their solutions for scaling.

Learning by doing: building consortia and competitive projects

The benefit is not limited to financial support. Czech partners gain hands-on experience in building international consortia, working side by side with Austrian and Norwegian industrial players, research organisations and innovation clusters. This collaboration strengthens their ability to prepare competitive proposals, defend their projects before expert evaluation panels, and refine their business strategies based on direct feedback from experienced mentors and investors.

The process itself becomes a learning journey, delivering valuable lessons learned that significantly increase their chances of success in future ESA calls and commercial markets.

    Access to infrastructure and expertise

The local Phi-Lab infrastructure provides a combination of technical facilities, industrial networks and innovation management expertise. Czech companies can access advanced testing capabilities, manufacturing know-how and system integration expertise that complement their own strengths. At the same time, they strengthen their readiness to move from technology development to real commercial projects, expanding beyond national boundaries and positioning themselves within the broader European space ecosystem.

    Czech-Austrian upstream matchmaking 2026

To further reinforce this cross-border cooperation, ESA Technology Broker Czechia co-organises the Czech-Austrian Upstream Matchmaking Day 2026, hosted at ESA Phi-Lab Austria in Vienna. This focused, in-person event is designed for CEOs and senior decision-makers of upstream space technology companies who are prepared to move beyond initial networking and work towards concrete joint projects for Phi-Lab calls.

Participants are expected to present one clearly defined product or technology with scaling potential and explore how it could be further developed together with an Austrian partner. The ambition is not simply to exchange contacts, but to lay the foundations for future joint applications to ESA Phi-Lab Austria calls and other ESA-related opportunities. By bringing together carefully selected companies and limiting the size of the event, the organisers ensure in-depth discussions, high-quality matchmaking and sufficient time to shape realistic, market-oriented project concepts.

Through these coordinated activities, ESA Technology Broker Czechia aims to strengthen the capacity of Czech industry to compete at European level. By leveraging the Phi-Lab ecosystem and fostering meaningful partnerships with Austria and Norway, Czech companies can enhance their technological excellence, improve their proposal-writing and project defence skills, and accelerate their transition from innovative ideas to sustainable commercial success within the space sector and beyond.
