The ESA Business Incubation Centres (ESA BICs) are Europe’s premier commercialisation network for supporting space start-ups. Operating in 36 centres across 23 European countries and with over 100 locations, ESA BICs support entrepreneurs to transform their innovative ideas into thriving start-ups by offering equity-free funding, access to ESA’s technical expertise, and tailored business support to foster growth and success. Since 2004 ESA BICs have been at the forefront of Europe’s space innovation, nurturing start-ups that are reshaping the industry.

Exceptional Revenue Growth
In 2024, companies supported by ESA Business Incubation Centres (ESA BICs) generated over €321 million in revenue, representing a substantial increase from €186 million in 2020. This impressive growth underscores the expanding strength and competitiveness of Europe’s space start-up ecosystem.
Significant Investment Attraction
Over the past five years, start-ups incubated by ESA BICs have secured more than €1.64 billion in private investment. This considerable influx of capital reflects the high level of confidence investors place in Europe’s space entrepreneurs and highlights the prominent role ESA BICs play within the sector.
Creation of High-Skilled Employment
ESA BIC-supported start-ups have made notable contributions to employment, with the number of high-skilled jobs created and sustained rising from over 3,886 in 2020 to more than 6,372 in 2024. This expansion is fueling economic growth and generating new opportunities across Europe.
Advancement of Innovation
Within the last five years, ESA BIC-supported start-ups have secured over 766 patents, demonstrating their pivotal role as drivers of technological progress and innovation in the space industry.
Philip Thomas, Head of the ScaleUp Division at ESA, says: “The ESA BICs have proved their value to Europe’s space ecosystem over 20 years. As the Council of Ministers 2025 approaches it will be essential to invest even more into the BIC network to ensure the support and funding provided gives entrepreneurs the best chance of success in a rapidly changing and highly competitive space environment”.
Feedback and Network Excellence
According to an internal study, participant satisfaction with ESA BIC services remained consistently high throughout 2020-2024, improving steadily from an average score of 8.5 in 2020 to 9.2 in 2024. It is no coincidence that the ESA BIC Network was indeed ranked 2nd among European incubator networks and 10th among European start-up hubs by the Financial Times. Recently, the network also celebrated a major milestone: 2000 start-ups incubated, reinforcing its position as a cornerstone of Europe’s space innovation ecosystem.
Niels Eldering, Head of Entrepreneurship and Business Incubation at ESA, says: “What we built over the past two decades is now accelerating before our eyes. We set out to create a home for Europe’s space entrepreneurs. Today, that home has grown into a thriving ecosystem. The ESA BIC Network is proving that when we empower innovators, alongside our entrepreneurs, Europe can lead.”
