The global population is projected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050, and with most people living in urban areas, cities face unique challenges. As our urban areas and cities expand, it is essential we transition to integrated advanced technologies to manage these areas effectively. ‘Smart cities’ leverage digital technologies and data analysis for the benefit of citizens, enhancing public services, sustainability, and quality of life.
Space technologies are pivotal within smart city frameworks, providing cost-efficient business options across all sectors. These include smart city grids, smart mobility, energy management, communications, waste management, urban planning, environmental monitoring, sustainable urban agriculture, infrastructure management, disaster response and security.
Space-based applications and emerging technologies, such as 5G, offer significant opportunities to improve smart city services and ESA can support vital technological integration within the smart city ecosystem.
As our urban centres expand both in size and economy, ESA is at the forefront of supporting and promoting sustainable development with initiatives such as the Task Force for Smart and Green Cities.
