    ESA Space Transportation Award Ceremony

9 October 2024 – Join us in shaping the future space transportation ecosystem

ESA is welcoming you to attend the upcoming FLPP Space Transportation Award Ceremony, a unique gathering that will bring together all key players from the European space transportation ecosystem – Large System Integrators, service providers, technology providers, scientists, investors, prospective users, Member States delegations, ESA representatives and more. This not only arises as an opportunity to gain insights from the top-ranked proposals submitted in the frame of five recent FLPP calls – THRUST!, BEST!, InSPoC-2, InSPoC-3 and FIRST!-AGNC – but also as an unique occasion for all stakeholders to expand their network, exchange on these substantial topics and take part in shaping the future of space transportation together. This gathering will be held on 9 October 2024 between 16:00 and 22:00 CET in Paris, France. Alongside this chance to build professional connection, the evening will be rhythmed by talks and round tables around the most promising ideas received in the frame of FLPP’s initiatives aiming to bring ESA’s vision of a future sustainable and competitive end-to-end space transportation ecosystem closer to reality.

    Indicative agenda of the evening:

    Time Session
    16:00-16.45 Welcome and introduction
16:45-20:00 Dynamic sessions around THRUST!, BEST, InSPoC-2, InSPoC-3 and FIRST! – AGNC
20:00 End of live stream, start of cocktail and networking dinner
    22:00 End of event

    About THRUST!

THRUST! (Technologies for High-thrust Re-Usable Space Transportation) is an initiative of the ESA Space Transportation Directorate programme FLPP, aiming to push forward European launcher liquid propulsion competencies by reaching significant demonstration results on high thrust staged combustion engine technology, thus providing results beyond the current liquid propulsion portfolio of ESA.

    About BEST!

BEST! (Boosters for European Space Transportation) is an initiative of the ESA Space Transportation Directorate FLPP. Its goal is to foster competition for new concepts of reusable first or boosters stages, through parallel concept studies targeting CM25 programme files preparation. This initiative falls within the definition of the necessary reusable transportation systems to achieve a routine access to space answering any future need.

BEST! contributes to responding to this overarching vision for the access to space aspect, allowing new launchers architectures or improving the performances of existing launch systems, leading to drastically improve the competitiveness and the environmental footprint of space launches activities.

    About InSPoC-2

In-Space Proof of Concept 2 (InSPoC-2) is the second step of the InSPoC venture towards enabling a robust and competitive in-space transportation ecosystem for Europe. While InSPoC-1 focuses on automatic rendezvous and docking, the objective of this project is to analyse, mature and achieve in-orbit demonstration of the essential technologies and interfaces for long-duration in-space cryogenic propellant storage and refilling. This shall enable future space logistics services such as propellant transfer between an orbital propellant depot and in-space transportation vehicles.

The Preparatory Phase of InSPoC-2, for which the Invitation To Tender was just closed, will serve to analyse the future in-space refilling ecosystem, refine the companies’ business case around this topic and define the concept of operations and conceptual design of the in-orbit demonstration. The project will be rhythmed by a standardisation convergence workshop and space transportation user’s club sessions, encouraging active cooperation among the Preparatory Phase consortia and with the rest of the future ecosystem stakeholders. Emphasis will be placed on the design of standard refilling interfaces and the elaboration of an actionable dissemination plan to foster future interoperability between spacecrafts.

    About InSPoC-3

In-Space Proof-of-Concept 3 (InSPoC-3) will leverage advanced on-board and shared intelligence to bring the orbital economy to the next level. In the future in-space transportation ecosystem, space-tugs will remain and operate in space during several years, performing different missions over their lifecycle, and will be orchestrated as fleets of vehicles and cargo. The objective of InSPoC-3 is to overcome the arising challenges for such vehicles, with regards to autonomy, longevity, “over-the-space” updates, advanced cooperation capabilities and space logistics orchestration. Advanced software technologies, as distributed computing, artificial intelligence, digital twins might be leveraged in this perspective.

The ideation system studies and prospective capabilities analyses, subject of this award ceremony, will pave the way for the structuration of InSPoC-3 preparatory phase for an in-orbit demonstration on on-board and shared intelligence for space-tugs.

    About FIRST! – AGNC

FIRST! stands for ‘’Future Innovation Research in Space Transportation’’ and is an initiative of the ESA STS Programme FLPP. In line with the decisions from the ESA Ministerial Council Meeting 2022, FIRST! designates a series of FLPP procurements in open competition, aiming at fostering disruptive technologies in Space Transportation and accelerating their de-risking through rapid prototyping and testing. The primary objective is to detect, select, and demonstrate technologies with the potential to transform their respective fields.

In pursuit of these goals a new FIRST! campaign has been launched, focusing this time on key technologies in the domain of Avionics and Guidance, Navigation and Control (AGNC).
