Dr Ian Llewellyn is Head of Energy Engineering at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero in the UK Government where he leads a team of energy engineering professionals that supply independent advice to UK Ministers on how the UK can achieve complete decarbonisation by 2050.
His current interests include looking at how recent disruptive developments in non-energy related technologies can be levered to make the transition to a low carbon economy easier. This includes technologies arising from space exploration programmes such as space based solar power where his team are looking to develop key technologies for power beaming energy from space into the UK grid, and the use of satellite communication, remote sensing, and control in the electricity network to maximise the amount of low-carbon electricity that can be efficiently transmitted to decarbonise hard-to-treat areas such as industry, heat and transport.
