Direct-to-device connectivity: an opportunity for Europe

The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising a event to explore the potential of Direct-to-Device (D2D) connectivity, an approach that promises a new era of mass-market satellite connectivity.

The event will be hosted on 28 November 2024, ESA HQ, Paris, France, from 09:00 to 17:00 CET, and will bring together key industry players and decision-makers to discuss the development and deployment of D2D services globally and in Europe.

Exploring the Potential and Challenges of Direct-to-Device Connectivity

Direct-to-Device (D2D) connectivity has the potential to transform the market by directly linking billions of smartphones and mobile devices, from vehicles to machinery to planes.

This technology could significantly close connectivity gaps and generate substantial economic value. However, the deployment of D2D services is complex, facing both commercial and technical challenges, as well as the intricacies of international regulatory roadmaps.

The event will focus on discussing the case for D2D deployment in Europe, including use cases, benefits, and the cost of inaction. It will also involve a debate on the pros and cons of various delivery models and the resulting technical requirements. Additionally, the event aims to identify success factors and formulate recommendations to decision-makers.
