{"id":17431,"date":"2026-10-28T14:44:51","date_gmt":"2026-10-28T13:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/?p=17431"},"modified":"2026-10-28T14:44:51","modified_gmt":"2026-10-28T13:44:51","slug":"aiming-high-esa-launches-new-isam-club-to-connect-europes-in-space-ecosystem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/?p=17431","title":{"rendered":"Aiming high: ESA launches new ISAM Club to connect Europe\u2019s in-space ecosystem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stakeholders from across Europe came together in Paris on 14 October for the <strong>inauguration of the ISAM Club<\/strong>, where ESA presented its ambition to accelerate the deployment of a coordinated, competitive and commercially viable European in-space ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the co-chairs of ESA ISAM Working Group \u2013 <strong>Agata Jozwicka-Perlant<\/strong>, Future Space Transportation System Manager, and <strong>Tiago Soares<\/strong>, Head of the Clean Space &amp; Circular Economy Office at ESA, the event brought together industry representatives, operators, investors, national space agencies and Member State representatives, research organisations and other stakeholders, both in Paris and online.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018ISAM is shaping the way we conceive future missions and enable the future of space activities\u2019 said Mr <strong>Soares<\/strong> in his opening remarks. \u201cESA\u2019s collaborative approach will allow European to shape and benefit from the new commercial markets that are emerging.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2>A unified approach to Europe\u2019s in-space ecosystem<\/h2>\n<p>In-Space Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) encompasses a broad range of capabilities that could transform the way Europe operates in space, from satellite life extension, repair and refuelling to orbital logistics, large-scale assembly and manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeams across ESA have been developing these capabilities for some time\u201d said Agata Jozwicka-Perlant. \u201cThe ESA ISAM Working Group now brings this work together across Directorates, coordinating a common vision, strategy and technology roadmaps, while connecting use cases across different application domains.\u201dThis ambition also extends beyond ESA. Cooperation with the European Commission is supporting a wider European approach to in-space operations and services, including coordinated roadmaps and the development of the future European in-space service infrastructure. In a joint declaration in June this year, the EC and ESA declared their intention to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Clean_Space\/Boosting_European_leadership_in_in-space_operations_and_services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cooperate closely<\/a> on the development and maturation of key technologies and mission concepts for In-Space Operations and Services facilitating the deployment of the EU\u2019s In-Space Operations &amp; Services 4 Infrastructure (ISOS4I) pilot mission by 2030.<\/p>\n<h2>From enabling capabilities to viable markets<\/h2>\n<p>Developing technical capabilities is only part of the challenge. Building a sustainable orbital economy also requires understanding who the customers are, what they need and under which conditions new services can become commercially viable.<\/p>\n<p>Through its work on use-case mapping and market assessment, ESA is therefore connecting technical development with customer demand, investment opportunities and credible commercial cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll actors must be engaged,\u201d said <strong>Sebastien Meranta<\/strong>, Strategic Initiatives Manager at ESA. \u201cWe have to extend our focus beyond the space sector to provide opportunities to collaborate to provide solutions to critical challenges facing Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Club will support this process by connecting priority use cases with potential customers and identifying the technical, commercial and institutional barriers that need to be overcome to bring new services to market.<\/p>\n<h2>Interoperability: enabling an open orbital economy<\/h2>\n<p>Interoperability is another central pillar of this emerging ecosystem. Future spacecraft will need shared capabilities and interfaces for rendezvous, docking, power and data transfer, refilling and other servicing operations<\/p>\n<p>The objective is to enable an open in-space infrastructure where different European stakeholders can operate and provide services, rather than creating a closed ecosystem dominated by a single solution. Passive interfaces should be open and interoperable, while leaving service providers room to innovate and compete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe in-space economy is rising, through converging trends of dynamic orbital operations for geostrategic assets, autonomous capabilities for exploration and science, assembling of large in-space infrastructures\u2026 All these fields will be enabled by shared capabilities and interfaces for Europe,\u201d said Yann Tincelin, In-Space Proof-of-Concepts (InSPoC) Manager at ESA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteroperability and modularity frameworks for spacecraft interactions will enable an open in-space infrastructure for European stakeholders to operate and provide services in the orbital economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As summarised during the inauguration:<strong> \u201cCollaborate on the ecosystem. Then compete on the market.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The ISAM Club: from coordination to action<\/h2>\n<p>Building on the work of the ESA Working Group, the newly inaugurated Club opens this collaboration to the wider European community.<\/p>\n<p>Its ambition is to become a one-stop shop for Europe\u2019s end-to-end in-space ecosystem, bringing together operators, integrators, service providers, technology suppliers, investors, research organisations, national space agencies and Member States representatives. The initiative will help align roadmaps, connect capabilities with needs and investment opportunities, develop high-value use cases and sustainable business models, and foster partnerships and interoperability.<\/p>\n<p>The first Club chapters will focus on use-case mapping and market shaping, as well as Spacecraft Servicing Interfaces, with further areas of collaboration expected to develop alongside the community.<\/p>\n<p>Participants in these chapters will, for example, have opportunities to help to define and validate ISAM use-cases and derive the respective user needs, identify synergies and contribute to the future interoperability framework, connect with partners across the ecosystem, access shared interoperability guidance and open interface requirements, and participate in upcoming workshops and working groups.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lyyti.fi\/reg\/ISAM_club\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"btn btn btn-outline-secondary ms-0\">Join the club<\/a>\n<p>The inauguration marks the starting point for continued collaboration.
