At the heart of this effort is the European Space Agency\u2019s (ESA) <strong>Third Party Missions (TPM) programme<\/strong>, an enabler of commercial, national and international Earth observation (EO) opportunities for Europe.<\/p>\n<h2>Four decades of access to EO data<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>ESA Third Party Missions foster entrepreneurship and accelerate scientific breakthroughs<\/strong>. For more than four decades, ESA\u2019s TPM programme has empowered research institutions, and ESA incubation centres from ESA Member States by sourcing and providing access to non-ESA EO data.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the programme which is managed in the ESA Earth Observation Directorate <strong>offers EO data from<\/strong> <strong>over 60 satellite missions<\/strong>, supporting research and development, business incubation, and the creation of innovative downstream applications. By consolidating diverse commercial datasets within a single framework, ESA makes high-resolution EO data more accessible to a global community of users, fostering innovation and market growth.<\/p>\n<p>The combined use of institutional and commercial data solutions creates powerful synergies and unlocks new potential for Earth-system science and related applications.<\/p>\n<h2>Strengthening Europe\u2019s space economy<\/h2>\n<p>The TPM programme plays a significant role in strengthening Europe\u2019s space economy. <strong>It accelerates the uptake of commercial EO data<\/strong> and enables startups, SMEs, large corporations, academia, and institutions to transform ideas into <strong>developing viable business solutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Through agreements with European commercial data providers, <strong>ESA acts as an initial anchor customer<\/strong>, purchasing data and making it available to users. <strong>This model creates a win-win ecosystem<\/strong>: companies benefit from a reliable initial revenue stream and increased visibility, while users gain access to a diverse and high-quality portfolio of EO data. These encompass very high-resolution optical imagery, greenhouse gas monitoring, radio occultation data and synthetic aperture radar capabilities. <strong>By integrating data from leading commercial providers<\/strong>, <strong>ESA ensures that users have access to cutting-edge information to address global challenges<\/strong> such as climate change, environmental monitoring, urban development and disaster management.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the programme has focused on <strong>supporting emerging European New Space companies<\/strong>. By engaging with innovative startups across ESA Member States, TPM fosters technological advancement and supports a dynamic and competitive European EO ecosystem. This commitment strengthens Europe\u2019s leadership in commercial space activities while enabling new market opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>By capitalising on commercial advances in remote sensing, <strong>the ESA Third Party Missions programme serves as a bridge between data providers and end users<\/strong>.
