{"id":16445,"date":"2026-04-08T09:38:25","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T07:38:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/?p=16445"},"modified":"2026-04-29T14:52:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T12:52:01","slug":"esa-supports-innovation-with-cnes-through-actinspace-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/esa-supports-innovation-with-cnes-through-actinspace-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"ESA supports innovation with CNES through ActInSpace 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jointly organised by the<strong> European Space Agency (ESA)<\/strong> and the <strong>French Space Agency Centre national d&#8217;\u00e9tudes spatiales (CNES)<\/strong>, the <strong>ActInSpace 2026 international finals<\/strong> took place on 2 April in Bordeaux, bringing together promising teams from this year\u2019s global hackathon and highlighting ESA\u2019s active role in evaluating and rewarding innovative uses of space technologies.<\/p>\n<h2>The Hackathon<\/h2>\n<p>This sixth edition began with the global hackathon on <strong>30-31 January 2026<\/strong>, held simultaneously across all participating locations to ensure equal access to mentoring and remote expert support.<\/p>\n<p>Across <strong>23 countries<\/strong> and <strong>53 cities<\/strong>, <strong>1<\/strong><strong>\u202f621 participants<\/strong> organised into <strong>391 teams<\/strong> worked through <strong>27 challenges <\/strong>proposed by <strong>ESA<\/strong>, <strong>CNES<\/strong>, <strong>Airbus<\/strong>, <strong>Thales Alenia Space<\/strong> and several other partners.<\/p>\n<p>The challenges are grouped into thematic areas to help guide participants in shaping their ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Everyday Life Business<\/strong>: using space technologies to develop solutions with direct societal or commercial impact<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be a NewSpace Player (#Space4.0): <\/strong>applying terrestrial technologies to improve space operations and contribute to the evolving NewSpace ecosystem<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Space for Earth &amp; Humanity: <\/strong>addressing humanitarian and environmental challenges through space\u2011enabled services<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fly to the Moon and Beyond: <\/strong>exploring ambitious concepts inspired by space exploration and future missions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These themes encouraged participants to think creatively about how space technologies and data can be adapted to address challenges on Earth or support future developments in the space sector.<\/p>\n<h2>The International Finals<\/h2>\n<p>ESA was represented at the finals by three representatives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Franck Germes<\/strong>, Head of the Contracts Department at ESA<\/li>\n<li><strong>Natacha Callens<\/strong>, ESA Academy Engagement Administrator<\/li>\n<li><strong>Guillaume Prigent<\/strong>, Business Developer &amp; Partnership Officer at ESA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They contributed to jury sessions, prize deliberations and engagements with participating teams, helping ensure that the evaluation process reflected both technical merit and potential for future development.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16450 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Media-3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Media-3-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Media-3-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Media-3-1024x759.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Media-3-768x569.jpg 768w, https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Media-3-1536x1138.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Media-3-2048x1518.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">On stage (from left to right): Jean\u2011Claude Souyris, Director of Strategy at CNES, Franck Germes, Head of the Contracts Department at ESA, Thierry Gharib, President at Novespace<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Recognition of the ESA Prize Winners<\/h2>\n<p>ESA awarded two prizes linked to its <strong>Earth observation (EO)<\/strong> and<strong> technology transfer challenges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The EO prize recognised innovative uses of EO data and AI. The winning team <strong>IPSA-OB2S from Paris-Saclay<\/strong>, <strong>AgriTradeTwin project<\/strong>, a concept that showed strong technical potential and clear future applicability. As part of the prize, the team will be invited to present their work at the <strong>\u03a6nnovation Summit at ESA\u2011ESRIN<\/strong> from 23-25 June 2026.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16448  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1000017225-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"489\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Guillaume Prigent, Business Developer &amp; Partnership Officer at ESA, presents ESA-sponsored EO prize<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The technology transfer prize highlighted the adaptation of space\u2011derived capabilities for new terrestrial applications. The winning team, <strong>Thunderwave<\/strong> <strong>team from Lithuania<\/strong>, was recognised for this prize. Up to five eligible team members will receive a place at an <strong>ESA Academy<\/strong> business\u2011 and innovation\u2011focused training session in 2026 or 2027.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16449 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Media-4-scaled-e1775631646856.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1178\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Natacha Callens, Administrator of ESA Academy Engagement Programme, presents ESA Academy-sponsored prize<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Finals Results and Jury Deliberation<\/h2>\n<p>Five teams reached the international finals following the morning\u2019s semi\u2011finals. They pitched their concepts before an international jury chaired by <strong>Jean\u2011Claude Souyris<\/strong>, Director of Strategy at CNES. After careful deliberation, the jury selected the overall winner of <strong>ActInSpace 2026<\/strong>, which will receive the event\u2019s grand prize: a zero\u2011gravity flight aboard the Airbus A310 Zero\u2011G.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INTERSTELLAR, from Dakar American University of Science and<\/strong> Technology, was announced as the overall winner during the closing ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16446 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Media-2-scaled-e1775631161170.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">ActInSpace 2026 first prize winner, INTERSTELLAR, from Dakar American University of Science and Technology<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Continuing a Global Innovation Effort<\/h2>\n<p>Since its creation in 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actinspace.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ActInSpace<\/a> has grown steadily, encouraging teams to explore entrepreneurial pathways supported by technical and business\u2011oriented guidance. Companies born from earlier editions remain active today.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 event continued this dynamic, demonstrating the value of bringing together a diverse international community to address real\u2011world challenges using space technologies. By fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of space and its possibilities among future generations and the evolving workforce, <strong>the initiative encourages participants from different backgrounds to think creatively and approach challenges from new angles<\/strong>.
